杉皮とは、文字通り杉の木の樹皮です。
高野家具では地元産の吉野杉の杉皮を使っています。
どんな木にも樹皮はありますが、杉皮は縦に裂け目があって、濃い茶色で、厚みがあるのが特徴です。
そんなに堅くはなくて、乾燥すると軽い素材です。
同じ杉でも、木によって木材の色味や木目が異なるように、皮も木によって表情が異なるので、それも魅力の一つです。
Cedar bark is literally the bark of a cedar tree.
Takanokagu uses locally produced Yoshino cedar bark.
All trees have bark, but cedar bark has vertical fissures, is dark brown in color, and is thick.
It’s not that hard, and it’s a light material when dry.
Just as the color and grain of the same cedar differs depending on the wood, the bark also has different expressions depending on the wood, which is also part of its appeal.

先人は、木材だけでなく、捨ててしまうことの多い皮も貴重な素材と捉え、古くから利用してきました。木を余すことなく使うという意味でも素晴らしい素材です。

木材に比べて耐朽性が強く水も通しにくいため、雨にも強く、古くから屋根や垣根などの屋外用の建材として主に利用されてきました。
しかしながら新しい建材の登場や和風建築の減少とともに、現代では普段生活していて目にすることは滅多にない素材になってしまいました。

ただ杉皮の魅力に惹かれて作品に取り入れているだけですが、そんな杉皮の魅力を他の方にも知ってもらいたいという想いで、作品の製作・発信をしています。
